Large 11' x 2' Kuba cloth rug or hanging with a very cool fringe. Lovely design. Made by hand by the Kuba people of Zaire. Vintage 1970s rug. Made of raffia - a plant fiber used particularly in central Africa, where it is woven into rectangular pieces of cloth. Since the 1500s the Kuba people have created and worn raffia cloth skirts.
A significant percentage of enslaved Africans were Kuba people, from the former Kongo areas of Angola, Zaire, and the Congo Republic.
